After Newsom Attacks Florida–Gov Desantis Takes Fight to California

For some strange reason, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has been picking fights with conservative states. He has put up billboards in Texas, encouraging locals to fly to California for abortions. He has slammed other red states for various, unprovable reasons. But he seems to really hate Florida, the state to which many former California residents are fleeing.

Newsom has criticized celebrated Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Even though Florida was the first state to reopen after the pandemic, Newsom accuses it of denying Americans their rights. Meanwhile, California embraces socialism, censorship, and gun control. Florida enjoys lower taxes and lower costs of living. Meanwhile, California is driving away businesses and workers, due to staggeringly high costs.

It seems DeSantis got tired of Newsom bad-mouthing his state. So, while celebrating the release of his new book, DeSantis took the fight to him.

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis slammed California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday while visiting the state for his speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

“I knew you guys got a lot of problems out here, but your governor is very concerned about what we’re doing in Florida, so I figured I had to come by,” DeSantis said at the start of his speech…

“And if you look over the last four years, we’ve witnessed a great American exodus from states governed by leftist politicians imposing leftist ideology and delivering poor results, and you’ve seen massive gains in states like Florida, who are governing according to the tried and true principles that President Reagan held dear,” he continued. Ouch! That’s gotta hurt Newsom. DeSantis reminded the leftist governor that an “exodus” has been taking place. Countless Americans have fled California, thanks to Newoms’s far-left leadership, especially during the pandemic.

He went on to criticize Gov. Newom’s leadership during the crisis. California closed down schools, businesses, and churches. The state even dragged churches to court, over its lockdown rules. DeSantis also boasted at how, as the pandemic was ending, Florida refused to require “vaccine passorts” for travelers, something states like California and New York were demanding.

DeSantis put the nail in the coffin by comparing the two states’ tourism rates. By 2021, Florida set a record for domestic tourism. California, instead, saw its tourism decline by 22% over the same period of time. Both these states depend on tourism as a major part of their economies.

It’s no secret why DeSantis is hammering California so badly, while trying to reach out to California conservatives. Despite being an overwhelmingly liberal state, there are still millions of registered Republican voters. Many of them are wealthy, to boot. Anyone that wants to run for president in 2024 needs to curry the support of most of these Republicans.

DeSantis wasn’t just going there to slam Newsom and promote his book. He is carefully laying the groundwork for a 2024 run–that has become very obvious. And with moves like this, he is building momentum.
