Whoopi’s accusation revolved around a delayed order for a Charlotte Russe, a classic sponge cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top. Goldberg claimed on The View that she had been snubbed for her political beliefs.
The bakery countered with a much simpler explanation: the cake wasn’t ready because their ancient boiler decided to retire early.
Rather than let the accusation bake into something ugly, Staten Island locals turned out in droves to show support for Holtermann’s. A crowd of Trump supporters, MAGA hats in tow, swarmed the bakery to cheer on its beleaguered owner.
Even a Trump impersonator stopped by to join the festivities. Jill Holtermann, visibly touched, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. “To think that this bakery has been here since 1878 and the support I’ve gotten is just so overwhelming,” she said.
The incident brought both Republicans and Democrats together—a rare sight these days.
Local city councilors united in condemning Goldberg’s comments, calling them an unnecessary attack on a family business that has been a cherished part of New York life for over 145 years.
The drama also highlighted the power of celebrity influence—and how dangerous it can be when wielded recklessly. Whoopi Goldberg’s platform allowed her to tarnish a small business over a misunderstanding.
Imagine if her claims had gone unchecked. It’s one thing to disagree politically; it’s another to mess with someone’s livelihood over a delayed sponge cake.
Ironically, the same Goldberg who had no issue airing grievances about her dessert recently discouraged families from gathering for Thanksgiving due to political divisions.
“It might not be time to gather,” she said on The View. Maybe it’s also not the time to make baseless accusations on national television.
