While the presidency still remains undecided, we know that House Democrats did not do well in the last election. They lost numerous seats to Republicans, mostly moderate liberals fighting popular conservatives.
We know from a leaked conference call that many Democrats blame the radical left of their wing for the losses. Democrats across the country suffered because they refused to confront the far-left’s extreme agenda. As protestors and socialists called for the defunding of police, moderate Democrats said little if anything to combat it.
Now it seems at least one key Democrat is standing up against the far-left’s agenda. Should Biden enter the White and Democrats gain seats in the Senate, they won’t be able to force radical plans through Congress. Why? Because one man from West Virginia is refusing to play their games. At least, he’s vowing not to.
Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) expanded on his differences with the left-wing of the Democratic Party by speaking out against the “defund the police” movement on Wednesday.
“Defund the police? Defund, my butt,” declared the West Virginia senator in a tweet on Wednesday evening. “I’m a proud West Virginia Democrat. We are the party of working men and women. We want to protect Americans’ jobs & healthcare. We do not have some crazy socialist agenda, and we do not believe in defunding the police.”
“I commit to you tonight and I commit to all of your viewers and everyone else that’s watching, I want to lay those fears, I want to rest those fears for you right now, because when they talk about, whether it be packing the courts or ending the filibuster, I will not vote to do that,” Manchin told Fox News host Bret Baier. Much like 2016, West Virginia went for Trump in the election. That puts Democrats like Manchin in a tricky place. He can’t openly embrace what radical liberals from California want for this country—if he still wants to keep his job come 2024. Also, the how the government is shaking out puts him in a very unique position.
It’s not just about saving his job in a conservative state. Joe Manchin might end up being a crucial tie-breaking vote in the Senate. That gives him tremendous power. And it seems he’s taking that power very seriously.
Manchin appears to be echoing the sentiments of many Americans, both red and blue. They do not want to see a radical agenda upend centuries of tradition and law. They don’t want cops defunded and the Supreme Court packed with leftists. I have a feeling plenty of Democrats across the country feel the same way, but have been bullied by the far-left into saying nothing.
But now, at the most unexpected of times, we see one Democrat standing up and speaking his mind. He has the power to do so, thanks to his unique position. But don’t be surprised to see more Democrats standing up like him, especially if Joe Biden ends up being president.
These Democrats, although not our best friends, might be able to hold the line against radical decisions that would devastate our country. Let’s hope more join Manchin.
