Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, a fierce Trump critic who has become a pariah in her own party, faces an uphill battle in her August 16 primary against Harriet Hageman, a candidate backed by President Donald Trump. However, Democratic help is on the way for Cheney.
In the GOP primary, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) and Tom Malinowski (D-N.J.) have both appeared in campaign ads urging people to support Cheney.
Phillips urged individuals to “consider changing their party and voting for Liz Cheney on or after August 16th.”
In a video, Malinowski added, “Wyoming Democrats” might put “country over party… by signing up to vote for her [Cheney] in the Republican primary.”
According to the ad metadata, Wyomingites Defending Freedom and Democracy paid for the social media advertising, but Big Tech presently indicates that an ad featuring Phillips’ video is live while a similar ad with Malinowski’s video is not.
Last summer, Cheney voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol upheaval and was subsequently removed as House GOP conference chair. She is one of the two Republicans serving on the House select committee formed to investigate the Jan. 6 event.
According to the New York Times, Cheney declared, “If being a stickler for the Constitution costs me my House seat, then it’s a cost I’m willing to pay.” She called the GOP “extremely sick,” claiming that it “is continuing to drive itself deeper and deeper into the ditch. I believe it will require many cycles before it can be fixed.”
Last month, Cheney said she would “continue to fight hard to ensure that Donald Trump is never in the Oval Office again” regardless of the outcome of her primary campaign.
