While the media was distracted by riots, the Senate Judiciary Committee conducted its first hearing into the FBI’s spying of the Trump campaign. Lindsey Graham and other lawmakers grilled former Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein over his involvement in the abusive investigation. What Graham concluded is staggering.
It’s been a long time coming, but finally we might be getting answers into what Obama’s administration tried to do to Trump. The history is long and complicated, so I’ll keep it short. Before and after the 2016 Election, Obama’s DOJ and FBI abused its power in the hopes of stopping a Trump victory and later to undermine his incoming administration.
A part of their efforts was a bogus investigation called “Crossfire Hurricane.” The FBI spied on a Trump staffer, Carter Page, claiming he was working with Russia. But numerous details have emerged that destroyed that narrative, including evidence that cleared his name. Despite that, the FBI and DOJ approved warrants that violated Page’s Fourth Amendment rights.
And that’s just for starters.
Yesterday, Lindsey Graham and the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled Rod Rosenstein, former deputy attorney general. He was involved in this investigation, helping to approve requests to continue this unlawful monitoring. Rosenstein claimed ignorance of that anything shady was going on. But that didn’t satisfy Graham.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told “Hannity” Wednesday that the Mueller investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia was set up in such a way that the “fox was guarding the henhouse.”
… “The most stunning thing to me was the scope memo outlining what Mueller could do was prepared by the same people that defrauded the [FISA] court,” Graham said. “… The same people that lied to the court set up the Mueller investigation.”
… “How is it possible the FBI and the Department of Justice defrauded the FISA court so many times and nobody knew about it?”
Graham then slammed Rosenstein’s testimony, saying that if someone knew that the Steele dossier — the key source for the Page warrant — was “garbage,” that person would be “a candidate to go to jail.” [Source: Fox News]
Sen. Ted Cruz also slammed Rosenstein and the former administration, saying what happened under Obama and Biden was worse than Watergate.
It’s clear that the FBI and DOJ pushed for surveillance that they knew were unwarranted. They fudge documents to hide evidence that cleared Page and others’ names. They deliberately defrauded the FISA court, hoping to gain access to the Trump campaign. All in the name of finding dirt on the candidate to ensure Hillary would win.
So, we had top government officials—sworn to uphold the law—violating the law to push a political agenda.
Yep, that’s much worse than Watergate.
It seems like Rosenstein is trying to weasel out of any responsibility in the matter. Yet he was the deputy attorney general. He was a high-ranking member of the DOJ. How could he sign off on warrant applications, not knowing something very suspicious was going on? Was he totally unaware of the activities of his own office? That’s like saying an upper level manager of a company has no idea what the company is doing!
Something definitely sticks. But we’re only at the start of this process. Many Obama officials might be exposed through all of this; some might go to jail. These hearings might rip a mask off the Democratic Party and bring some of their most powerful operatives to their knees.
Is it any wonder why the media is so obsessed with riots and protests? Anything to distract from the real news going on right now.
