In Michigan’s gubernatorial Republican primary, Republican Tudor Dixon cruised to an easy victory Tuesday, indicating a competitive challenge with Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in November.
According to Detroit Free Press results, Dixon has nearly twice as many votes as her closest competitor, entrepreneur Kevin Rinke, at the time of this writing. Around 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time, a while after most polls closed in the state, Wasserman called the race.
In a five-way primary, former Pres. Donald Trump’s endorsement last week boosted conservative media personality Tudor Dixon to become a clear front-runner.
“When I first met Tudor Dixon, she was not very well-known,” Trump stated in his endorsement announcement. “I could tell she had something really special.”
“She’s for God, the Second Amendment, and freedom, and she won’t be stopped!” Trump announced. “She is ready to stand up to the Radical Left as they attempt to indoctrinate our children, and she is prepared to go head-to-head with one of the worst Governors in America, Gretchen Whitmer, who is attempting to destroy Michigan and our country.”
In the primary, however, she ran with the support of Michigan’s wealthy DeVos family.
Previously, it appeared difficult for Dixon to rise to the top of the gubernatorial primary race. However, in May, half of the Republicans in the race were banned from running after submitting invalid nomination papers to the State Board of Canvassers.
Disqualifications forced the main into a last-minute battle between underdogs.
The chaos helped Whitmer, who ran unopposed in the primary, as recent polls have shown her to hold a significant advantage, and election analyst Cook Political Report has recently designated the race as “leaning D.”
The Republican Governors Association (RGA) was ecstatic about Dixon’s victory Tuesday night, saying the group could not be “more excited” to “get rid of Whitmer’s failed administration.”
“It looks like Michigan voters sent a clear message this evening that they are sick of Gretchen Whitmer’s rampant hypocrisy, absolute disregard for transparency, and her failed agenda that is making it more difficult for families to make ends meet,” the RGA’s co-chairs said. We couldn’t be more delighted to support Tudor Dixon this fall to bring an end to Whitmer’s disastrous reign.
