Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is hitting back at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s criticism of the GOP-led investigation into Hunter Biden’s dealings with Ukrainian energy company, Burisma Holdings.
In response to the Senate Homeland Security’s vote this week to subpoena Blue Star Strategies, the Democratic public relations firm that represented Burisma, Pelosi called the move a form of “political retribution.”
“It is sad that the GOP Senate has meekly and weakly chosen to be complicit in the president’s desperate and dangerous political tactics,” Pelosi said. “I call upon Leader McConnell to take a pause in the Senate GOP’s obstruction of meeting the needs of the American people.”
McConnell pointed to the impeachment trial against President Trump last year and called the Senate’s continuing investigation a “legitimate oversight responsibility.”
“I’d say to the speaker after the impeachment, you are not in a position to be lecturing us about what the appropriate use of Senate time is,” McConnell told Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Thursday. “This is a legitimate oversight responsibility of the Senate there was a lot of apparent misbehavior going on in the opening of those investigations into Gen. Flynn and others. And so, Ron Johnson, the head of Homeland Security, has got subpoenas out for Hunter Biden. Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has laid out a series of hearings that people he wants to call to come testify. If the House can spend time on a baseless impeachment effort, then we should at least have oversight over what happened to initiate this whole process a couple of years ago.”
Republicans are looking into Biden’s employment as a board member of Burisma during the same time his father served as vice president under the Obama administration with a key role in influencing Ukrainian policy.
The Senate Homeland Security Committee voted 8-6 on a party line to subpoena Blue Star Strategies on Wednesday. The subpoena included deposition requests for the firm’s leadership.
