New York City has seen an exodus since the summer began.

“People are fleeing the city in droves,” Moon Salahie, owner of Elite Moving & Storing in Yonkers, told the New York Post. “The least movement would be the Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue crowds. Those people don’t have to leave because they have second homes.”

Salahie said the vast majority of people he has provided moving services to since June are moving to the suburbs north or west of the city.

People cite lockdown measures implemented during the coronavirus pandemic as one of the motivations behind residents moving out of the city.

“Before, you can take them out to the park, playground. Now, that’s not even possible,” Fatine Fatri told the paper about her two children. “It was a nightmare.”

Fatri is one of several mothers who say that the city’s rising crime rates, coupled with continued lockdown measures, have made living in the city untenable.

“As a parent, this isn’t the place I once knew. I feel like NYC is disappearing so fast, and no one’s doing anything,” said Allison Eden, a mother of two teenagers. “There’s nowhere for them to go. I don’t want to feel afraid, and I don’t want my children to be scared to go outside.”

Thousands of New Yorkers have moved to Connecticut since the pandemic began, the Hartford Courant reported.

The New York Post reported this weekend that mothers from the wealthy Upper West Side are among those taking part in the exodus.

“In the best of times, NYC is a hard place to live,” one mother and activist against crime, Elizabeth Carr, said. “Now, you have all this other stuff. It’s a question for families … to have to see a guy masturbating on the corner or explain to my kids while I’m buying diapers at Duane Reade why this guy wearing no shoes is collapsed on the floor and they’re doing CPR on him.”
