Michigan rep. Justin Amash disgusted Americans when he betrayed his own party by saying Trump should be impeached. Many GOP leaders turned on him, saying it was a stunt so he could get attention. Now, the so-called conservative is finally facing the consequences of his betrayal. He might not even have his seat for much longer.
Little known representative Justin Amash must have been desperate for attention. Even though he was a member of the Freedom Caucus, a strong conservative group within Congress, he made a move that sought to generate support among left-wing media pundits and Democrats.
After the Mueller report came out—clearing Trump of any collusion—Amash took to Twitter and disturbingly claimed Trump “engaged in impeachable conduct.” A bizarre thing to say, based on a report that clearly shows Trump did not collude with Russia nor did he try to obstruct justice.
Amash’s statement sounded a lot like what Democrats have been saying. It’s hard not to imagine he tweeted this simply to get cred among left-wing cronies who want Trump gone. Only the most deranged and out-of-touch liberals really think Trump should be impeached. Or Democrats so desperate for attention, they would say anything to appear on CNN. I guess Amash is in one of those camps.
Quickly, he faced backlash from his own party. Why would any Republican turn on a president doing so much for their cause? Trump have achieved more conservative goals in his first term than even Ronald Reagan. He’s slashed taxes and is bringing back jobs. Why would any conservative attack a president like that?
Amash was condemned by the Freedom Caucus’ leaders. Soon, he was kicked out of the group. Then, things got much worse, as a conservative primary challenger appeared—who just might take his seat. Already Jim Lower, a Trump supporter, is polling higher than Amash in his district.
I guess Amash realized the jig was up. He announced he was leaving the Republican Party for good.
Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan now says he is an Independent, as partisan politics has taken its toll on the American people.
He said that congressional leaders use the prospect of “chairmanships, committee assignments, bill sponsorships, endorsements and campaign resources” to keep party members in line…

Amash claims he’s leaving the party because he’s just so upset about partisan politics in Washington. Sure, Justin, we believe that. You just destroyed your reputation among conservatives and are losing your primary race. There’s no way this leaving of the GOP has anything to do with you trying to save your seat by running as an Independent.
Nope, it has everything to do with you wanting to end the two-party system. Because a lone politician with a terrible record has the ability to end a situation that’s been around for over 100 years.
President Trump called out Amash’s departure, completely torching the turncoat.
Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is “quitting” the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser! [Source: Twitter]
Trump gets it. Amash destroyed his chances with his betrayal of the president. Now, he’s trying to avoid a primary loss to Lower by simply running as an Independent. But something tells me even then, he’s going to lose big time. Americans don’t like seeing politicians turn on their own party leader. Amash thought he could win over liberals with his attacks. He thought he could boost his career by attacking the president.
Instead, it’s all but over.
