Ann Widdecombe was attacked in her isolated country house in rural England on July 8. She'd been scheduled for a television interview that afternoon. When she didn't show up, authorities began searching for her. Her body was found the next day, July 9, lying on her kitchen floor bludgeoned to death.

She was 78 years old. She wasn't a threat to anyone. Her suspected killer drove 300 miles to get there to take her out.

Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested on July 11 — more than 200 miles from the crime scene, back in northern England. British prosecutors have now charged him with murder. But that's not all they charged him with. After discovering what investigators called "new information and evidence" during his time in custody, Kerry was rearrested on suspicion of commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Counter Terrorism Police have taken over the investigation. Detectives are now working through more than 800 lines of inquiry. And when police searched Kerry's home, they found clippings of news articles about Reform UK, its leader Nigel Farage, and the party's immigration policies. A source close to the investigation told reporters, "It would appear he had a profound dislike of the party, its leader, and its policies."

So we're looking at a young man who allegedly harbored enough political hatred to drive 300 miles, beat a 78-year-old woman to death in her own home, then drive home.

Widdecombe was a conservative, pro-life icon in England. She served nearly 25 years as the Conservative MP for Maidstone, winning her first seat in Parliament back in 1987. She served as prisons minister under Prime Minister John Major. After leaving the House of Commons in 2010, she became a reality television personality — appearing on Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother — before returning to politics as a Brexit Party MEP. In 2023, she joined Reform UK as its immigration and justice spokeswoman. She was also a patron of Right to Life UK, where she maintained what the organization described as a "strong and consistent pro-life voting record" throughout her career. Right to Life UK said she was "a leader in the public fight for protections for unborn babies at the beginning of life and the elderly and vulnerable towards the end of life."

She was a Catholic convert who said what she believed and never apologized for it. That, apparently, was enough for a left-wing activist to justify killing the 78 year old retiree.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage visited the area and laid flowers near the crime scene. He called the murder an "act of barbarity" and added, "From what I can make out, this was premeditated murder." Farage also issued a broader warning for anyone in public life: "The world is very much more dangerous than it's ever, ever been."

The instinct from certain quarters will be to treat this as an isolated incident — a disturbed individual acting alone, nothing to see in the broader pattern. That framing conveniently ignores the clippings found in Kerry's home, the 300-mile drive, and the terrorism charges. It also ignores that political violence against conservative figures in Britain has been escalating. When someone researches a political party, drives across a country, and beats an elderly woman to death, calling it "random" requires ignoring every fact in the case file.

In the United States, a similar pattern has emerged. A left-wing radical went to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's home with a weapon and an intention to kill after the Dobbs decision. Republican Rep. Steve Scalise almost lost his life at a congressional baseball game by a Bernie Sanders supporter. We've watched pro-life pregnancy centers firebombed with "If abortions aren't safe, then you aren't either" spray-painted on the wreckage. The pattern isn't British or American. It's ideological.
